How To Counter Your Staff Turn-Over!
There is this really interesting phenomenon that is happening. It's called the mass exodus where people are leaving their jobs. This might be because of the knock-on effects of covid but it’s also highlighted the massive need for businesses to start looking at their company culture.
I read recently that 46% of job applicants say that culture is important to them. Back in the day, when we had the industrial ages, the workforce needed to be little robots, little human robots. But nowadays, people are looking for so much more than that in their jobs.
They're looking for purpose, they're looking for meaning…….
And they're looking to be with a company that has an amazing culture that's going to help support and grow them.
One of the major benefits when you create an amazing team culture, is you're opening yourself up to the brilliance of the team. Back in the day, and the industrial ages, they used to have a hierarchy leadership style, one person made the shots. And that was the way that it went. But now you can bring everyone on board and create a culture where everyone feels like they're part of something.
And that is a force to be reckoned with!
The other thing about culture is that it's really easy to measure. How many people do you have leaving your company every year?
When I was a restaurant manager in Nelson, we worked out that it costs approximately $2,000 to train a new person into a hospitality position because you've got hidden costs, like having to schedule a manager on the shift that they're working in case something happens to oversee them, having to pair them up with somebody for a week to make sure that they get their all of their training that they deserve. And then of course, there's going to be the inevitable mistakes that they make, because they're still learning. All of that adds up.

To solve this issue we need to get clear on the vision and mission of the company and have really awesome values that your team can aspire to. It is key for you to have success when developing a culture in your company that's going to help people stick and stay around and emotionally engage when you get them involved with that process!

They don't feel like they have a manager or a boss that cares about their own development…. We all get given job roles. And that role specifies what you're meant to be doing. But what if you want to grow? What if you want to change? What if actually, your dream is to do something else and you're currently in a position that isn't serving you anymore? So create a growth pathway for each team member to be able to keep learning and upskilling - that’s what creates a high-quality culture.

I call it ‘the closed-door policy.’ They want to know all about what's going to come up going on in the company, but they're always busy. They're always busy, and nobody feels like they can go and talk to them. ..
So if you're a manager or an owner, and you're going to be always head down, rushing around, recognizing that as a leader in your role, you need to create time in your schedule to check in with your team and it's got to be monthly.
