Why You Don’t Trust Your Team
So you want to be able to step back but you cant give up some of your tasks to your team members but you are afraid that it wont be done right?
You are stuck in the ‘trust trap’.
You are afraid of losing control. This is a common one for the business owners I work with because their business is their baby. Letting someone else take the reins is scary. I get it. But that’s not about them. It’s about you. Your ability to handle the challenges that come up as a result of delegating makes a big difference. As my mum always says, “Nobody died.”. Your fear of losing control is about your journey. Coaching can help you understand this fear and work with you to create more functional ways of navigating leadership before you burn out from doing everything yourself.
Lack of clarity around roles. When you never take the time to understand who does what in your business, there will always be a lingering fear that things will slip through the cracks…. When you can create time to step back from your business and look at roles and responsibilities then you will be able to understand who you can give the new responsibilities to and what their capacity is.
You may have been burnt in the past. Managing underperforming people may not be your strength and that means you have given too much rope in the past without accountability. If you are honest with yourself did you really give the task the the right person and did you provide accurate support for them to grow into the role?
Culture norms. If it is not a ‘normal’ thing in your team to take responsibility for a role or make sure that things get done with care you may be faced with classic unengagement and that is a slippery slope. The team thinks ‘No one cares so why should I?”
Imposter syndrome. If you doubt yourself then you will doubt others. Simple as that. You don’t want to be found out because then the team wont trust you right? This is so common amongst the leaders that I coach and is one of the main reasons why these leaders are doing everything themselves to prove themselves to the world.
To turn this around you have one solution. Vulnerability.
Its vulnerable to let go.
Its vulnerable to ask for support.
Its vulnerable to trust.
